Several Year 8, gifted and talented students were selected to participate in
a video conferencing competition, which was organised by Essex County
Council. Sawyers Hall College took part in the second heat, which ran
over a two day period.
Five Essex schools competed; including Alec Hunter, Philip Morant, Stanway, Harwich
School and Sawyers Hall College and our representatives were Sian Allen, Kelsey
Marchant, Emma Clarke, Lisa Partis, Freddie Morris and Sean Cleary.
Essex County Council provided video conferencing equipment, including a mobile
phone and issued instructions to the students via email, text and phone call.
A week before the competition began, each student was given a novel to read,
entitled ‘Tunnels’.
The students were given a series of tasks to complete, each including a deadline,
the first of which was to write a blog about themselves and to submit a group
photograph.
They were asked to set up an imaginary video production company and to produce
a press kit and trailer for a film of the book ‘Tunnels’.
Each school was asked to evaluate the press kits of the other schools and a trailer
from one other school.
Unfortunately, Sawyers Hall didn’t win but our students did win praise from the
other schools and the organisers.
