Sawyers Hall College invited Snakes Alive to come and spend a day working with the students giving practical hands on opportunities to get close to some of the largest and most interesting snakes in the world and to take part in its open evening activities on Wednesday 19th March. Yr 5 and 6 students from across Brentwood came along to see for themselves just how the college has made impressive steps forward since coming out of special measures last year.

Prefects and students from the student forum took prospective parents around the building and inevitably to the science department where the snakes were available to touch and hold. Joanne Lebow, the science teacher who organised the event said “The students gained so much from this exercise throughout the day and we look forward to their next visit”. Sawyers hall students then gave talks on the habitat and adaptation of the snakes, Scorpions and Spiders that they had learned about during the day to those who attended the open evening.

“I am delighted that so many parents and their children came along to help us celebrate our student’s achievements and get a first hand impression of their work in all areas of the college” said Stephen Capper, Headteacher.

He went on to say “This really is a very stimulating place to work now and our students achieved excellent results in the recent January Science modular and A Level exams, which is a very big credit for them and their teachers”.
With its recent bid to become a Specialist Sports college with Science, the signs are good for its continued development and key role within the borough’s secondary schools.

“Wow, this place is amazing” said one youngster as he walked around the science labs whilst keeping a watchful eye on the snakes and their handlers. “I never knew they felt like that”, “I really enjoyed coming here” said other young attendees at the open evening event.

Sixth form students Jade Lawrence, Head Girl and Jacob Ellis, Deputy Head Boy along with senior prefects gave talks to the parents in the main hall giving examples of their time and experiences at the college.

The Headteacher is offering individual guided tours around the college during the day so that prospective parents can see it in action and the students at work in their classrooms. Any parent wanting to take him up on this should contact Mrs Stagg on 01277 220808 to book a visit.
