Sawyers Hall College is saying it with flowers this summer! Hanging baskets
and planters bursting with colour have appeared in many areas of the
college site tended by students and members of staff alike.
The Sawyers Hall College in Bloom competition began on Tuesday 2nd June,
with Mrs Adams and Mrs Sitch, (finance department) Mrs Hale (MISSW) and
Mr and Mrs Jeffs (ICTM), showing student representatives how to plant hanging
baskets as well as passing on their gardening tips.
Each tutor group and department decided on a name and theme for their basket
and nominated people to do the planting, take responsibility for after-care
and to produce a statement about their entry.
Baskets, compost and a basic pack of plants were provided although the
rules allowed other plants and decorative items to be added depending on
the theme chosen.
All tutor groups from years 7 to 9 took part, as well as eleven departments,
who planted baskets with themes ranging from an edible basket to Wimbledon
Strawberries and Cream, to Shakespeare
Imaginative names included ‘Mrs Hale-y’s Comet’, Flying the Flag, Pastoral
Pandemonium and HMS Starfish.
Judging will take place during the week beginning 6th July, by staff, governors
and members of the local community, using the following criteria:
• Originality of name (5 marks)
• Originality of theme and use of materials (10 marks)
• Use of colour (5 marks)
• Teamwork and engaging the community (20 marks)
• Statement justifying the choices taken in planting the basket (10 marks)
The mayor, Cllr Tony Sleep and Paul Hughes (Senior Area Advisor) came on Wednesday
8th July to judge the entries and award the prizes and to enjoy a traditional
afternoon tea, prepared by Mr Reeves’ catering students.
The student winners were:
Gold 7H
Silver 8H
Bronze 9A
Staff winners were:
Gold PLC
Silver SLT
Bronze Reprographics
Many thanks to Mrs B. Tucker for arranging and coordinating
the event, to the Site Team for installing the extra hanging basket brackets
and to Mrs Adams, Mrs Hale, Mrs Sitch and Mr and Mrs Jeffs for their
hanging basket demonstrations.
