SOUTH ESSEX UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE - SUMMARY DETAILS
The University Technical College (UTC) is a new concept in education; it will
be an exciting alternative environment for 14-19 year-olds to study in.
Students will follow a curriculum of professional & technical study in specialist areas, alongside GCSE-level qualifications in
English, maths, science, IT, a language & a humanities subject. The detail of the curriculum will be influenced strongly
by Employers, Further Education Colleges & Universities to make sure that students have the best possible chance of a successful
future in Higher Education, Apprenticeships &/or Employment.
South Essex UTC (SEUTC) will specialise in Financial Services, Business,
Construction & the
Built Environment; key employment & re-generation markets in Brentwood & South Essex.
SEUTC partners include a University sponsor, an FE sponsor; a work based
learning provider & several
significant employers from the Financial & Construction sectors. The SEUTC Board will be Chaired by an employer & include all sponsors.
SEUTC will also manage a broader campus including existing provision in
Hair & Beauty & Construction
as well as further provision agreed & shared with local schools to ensure progression & opportunity from Foundation/Level 1 onwards. (Eg, ICT, Hospitality & Catering, Sport & Leisure, etc)
SEUTC will manage the exisiting commitments to community users on the Sawyers
Hall College site & ensure
continuity of provision for community groups & adult education.
SEUTC will cater for 120 year 14-16 year olds per year & 180
year post 16 students per year when it fully opens. Students will come
from a zoned catchment area reaching out across South Essex. Brentwood
children will benefit from being in the priority catchment area and from
the curriculum & resources which will include level 1, 2 & 3 qualifications as well as industry standard professional accreditation and
facilities.
SEUTC is not an elitist organisation & will
not “cream off” bright students. Students will be admitted on the basis
of application & aptitude – not ability.
The capital investment from Government for a UTC is likely to be around
the 5 million pound mark with additional funds and resources beyond this
raised through sponsors.
The establishment of SEUTC will not close another school & is
the best fit in terms of a sustainable organisation that meets the demonstrable
vocational ‘gap’ in Brentwood and the surrounding area.
