Sawyers Hall College Policy for Entry September 2008

The College is an 11-18 co-educational Comprehensive school. The planned admissions number for each of Years 7 to 11 in September 2008 will be 260.

Criterion to be used in the event of over-subscription for entry
Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below, to decide which children to admit.

1. “Looked after children” **

2. When a child has an older sibling attending the College
(A sibling is a brother or sister, or a step-brother or step-sister, living at the same address, who is attending the College at the time of application and for whom there is reasonable expectation that he or she will be attending at the time of the proposed admission).

3. Children from the Borough of Brentwood living within the existing Priority Admissions Area for the College which includes the area known as ‘the Five Parishes’ of Blackmore, Doddinghurst, Kelvedon Hatch, Navestock and Stondon Massey (map available on request).

4. Where there are medical grounds and/or strong social reasons (supported by a doctor’s certificate) for admitting the child.

5. Other children on the basis of proximity of the child’s home to the College, as measured ‘as the crow flies’ on a map, with those living nearer being accorded the higher priority.

** A ‘looked-after child’ is defined as a child who is in the care of a Local Authority or is provided with accommodation by that authority.

Late Applications
Late applications will be handled through the Essex Co-ordinated Scheme for Admissions.

Entry to Sixth Form
As an 11-18 co-educational Comprehensive school, there is an expectation that the majority of Year 11 students already in the College will wish to continue their education at “Sawyers Hall”. Subject to fulfilling the individual requirements of particular courses, students from the College Year 11 will have priority over external applicants.
The Prospectus, “Welcome to the Sixth Form”, is published annually and makes clear that external applicants are welcomed to join the College, subject again to them fulfilling the individual requirements of particular courses.
