Business and Communication Systems (Single GCSE)
What are the Key Features?
Business and Communications Systems aim to enable students to develop
a sound knowledge and broad understanding of aspects of:
• workplace organisation and the business environment;
• a range of information and communication systems and their applications
in the workplace;
• an ability to choose, design and use information and communications
systems to carry out a range of tasks and solve business problems;
• communication skills, by composing, in good English, appropriate
and coherent responses to business problems;
• a capacity for making reasoned judgements about the selection,
presentation and interpretation of data;
• an awareness of the importance of layout and design in the workplace
and their implications for health and safety.
How is the course taught?
Students are taught in ICT classrooms where they have individual
access to computers. A variety of teaching methods are used including
research-based assignments, group simulations and visiting speakers/external
visits, as well as formal classroom teaching. Parents are requested
to encourage students to complete homework and meet deadlines
supporting them in the collection of research material. In order
to keep up-to-date, students should be encouraged to read ‘quality’
newspapers and magazines.
How is it assessed?
Students are assessed by two examinations, a theory paper (33%)
and a practical paper (67%). There are two tiers of Assessment:
Foundation (C-G) and higher (A*-D). The theory paper involves
students answering questions requiring short answers and extended
writing - to be answered on the question paper testing the candidate’s
knowledge and understanding of the subject content. The practical
paper is an externally set practical paper requiring the use
of computers.
Why study this course?
Achievement of this GCSE supports progression to Applied and Intermediate
courses in Business and/or ICT, NVQ Administration, Business
, ICT and other vocational training in banking, distribution
and retailing. It also provides students with opportunities to
apply for employment in business and administration
