Business Studies (Single GCSE)

What are the Key Features?
The students develop an understanding of the various elements of a Business and develop useful, flexible business skills. The topics of study are delivered through five areas of work: Business and its environment, Human Resources, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Production.

How is the course taught?
Classes of mixed ability are taught in an activity based approach where students investigate real business organisations to develop their knowledge. A variety of methods are used in the lessons: individual research; videos; visiting speakers and group simulations, as well as more formal class teaching. Students are advised to speak to a Business Studies teacher before making their choice, to ensure they are aware of the rigorous demands of the course.

How is it assessed?
There is one piece of coursework to be completed throughout the course, which counts as 25% of the final mark. The terminal examination is based on a case study which is issued to the students after Christmas in Year 11. Two levels of examination are available (Higher and Foundation) and students will be entered at the level deemed most suitable for them to achieve maximum success. The range of grades available for each tier is as follows: Higher Level A*-D and Foundation Level C-G.

Why study this course?
This course in particular can be seen as a prelude to a BTEC Business Course or an Applied Business A Level. It provides a broad foundation of knowledge relevant to a wide range of careers in both public and private organisations. This course specifically does not limit students to a particular career path or job. Students achieving 5 GCSEs at ā€˜C’ or above (with English and Maths at ā€˜C’) are likely to be accepted onto the Applied A Level course in Business. This course can be used to provide students with sufficient skills and understanding of business organisations and operations to lead to either a Higher Education Degree course or to employment. The course will provide students with the opportunities to apply for posts in trainee management.
