Course Introduction:
This course aims to develop students as independent, confident & reflective
readers, able to relate literary and non-literary texts to the contexts
in which they are produced.
The course studied is designed to encourage students to:
• Enjoy a subject that is stimulating & fun
• Understand our culture and where we came from in terms of our literary
heritage
• Be more adept at expressing yourself
• Take part in a subject that is a respected A Level, desired by universities & employers
Entry Requirements:
To succeed in this course students will need to have attained:
GCSE Grade B in English Language,
Grade C in English Literature
Course Assessment:
AS Level (Year 12)
Unit 1 Introduction to Language and Literature study
Assessed by way of an examination (1 hour 30 minutes) on a pre-set Anthology
of themed texts.
AS 60% A2 30%
Unit 2 Themes in Language & Literature
Coursework: a two part assignment on a chosen pair of texts. Discussion
of a set theme in relation to the texts and a piece of creative writing
to demonstrate understanding of the texts as a whole.
AS 40% A2 20%
A2 Level (Year 13)
Unit 3 Talk in Life & Literature
Assessed by way of an examination (2 hours) with one question on a prescribed
play and one requiring comparison of unseen texts.
A2 30%
Unit 4 Text Transformation
Coursework: a folder of transformed texts and associated commentaries.
A2 20%
