English
English is the language through which we communicate and express
ourselves and its study is a vital part of the curriculum in
the college.
The study of English involves exploring how meaning
is and has been conveyed through a variety of media-prose, poetry,
newspapers, film, advertisements, etc. It is vibrant because it
is a constantly evolving organism-think about the words that have
entered the language recently…hoody, tri-band, upskill. Correspondingly,
it is also the study of where we come from in terms of language
and culture…
’DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe’…(Notice how spellings
have changed).
At Sawyers Hall College, we study the changing
face of English, both in non-fiction and fiction. The vast majority
of students are encouraged to sit both GCSE English and GCSE English
Literature, while the AS/2 course combines both approaches, English
Language and Literature.
During Key Stage Three, students are taught the
building blocks for the study of English, from basic word level
understanding, onwards through to the complexities of sentence
structure and even upwards into analysis of prose and poetry. Year
7 students begin their academic experience with a tailored literacy
programme followed by a year of foundation-building for success
in the subject. Students learn about non-fiction and persuasive
texts, producing their own TV advertisements in Year 8. In addition,
they visit The Globe Theatre and become more confident about Shakespearean
texts. In Year 9, SAT’s preparation guides them through complex
prose comprehension, analysis of prescribed set scenes from The
Tempest and through to becoming confident and competent writers.
Throughout their time at Sawyers Hall, students
are encouraged to enter competitions, visit the theatre, read independently
and master the skills of research, collation and evaluation.
Our aim is to develop a lifelong love and appreciation
of language and literature whilst producing confident and competent
users of English.
