Food and Catering Studies
The Food studies department at Sawyers Hall is extremely well resourced with
two state of the art food rooms.
It is a subject in which students can achieve regardless of ability.
It’s a subject in which all can take part and become creative.
All students in key stage 3 study the subject and then have the chance to choose
Hospitality and Catering at key stage 4 for study at GCSE level.
What students have said about the subject?
“It’s not just cooking”
“I have really enjoyed learning different aspects
of hospitality and catering”
“Its great you get to be creative in food”
Across all the key stages the students have the
chance to take part in activities and competitions within the department.
Key stage 2
Within the school year we run a number of taster
classes (lets make cooking fun!!) when year 5 and 6 get a chance
to come and use the facilities. Pizza, cake making are just some
of the activities we have done.
We try to get the year 7 students involved by assisting in the
lessons.
Food safety foundation certificate
Students in year 10 complete 6 hours of e learning
study to gain basic foundation training in food safety. On successful
completion of the programme students achieve a personalised certificate
featuring the RIPH logo.
This helps students to grain part time jobs in catering as by law
all food handlers need to be trained in food safety.
Future chef
Future chef is run by springboard charitable trust
and forms part of its high profile national schools programme.
It is designed to help students learn about food and is based on
a nationwide, four staged competition. Each year we run a school
based heat were all years compete against each other for the school
trophy (the Hedley Walter cup). The winner then goes off and competes
at a local heat.
Active kids get cooking
The food awards are supported by Sainsbury’s.
They are design to run along the school curriculum. Students gain
collectable certificates which show off their food knowledge awards
run from bronze in year 7 to platinum in year 11.
These are run in lessons or in a after school food club.
Community links
Have made links in the community at Montbazon court care home run
by East living.
This is a 26 flat site with on site care staff. The students have
been able to use the fully equipped industrial kitchen and dinning
room to run functions for the residents.
This is great for key stage 4 gcse students studying hospitality
and catering.
