History

Why is History Great?
History can be fun and interesting, especially at Sawyers Hall. History helps you to develop your understanding of the world around you through examining past events, people and societies. We look at how and why things change or even stay the same, and we look at key turning points and figures from around the world. We encourage students to become independent learners and use a variety of activities to stimulate interest. History helps to develop an enquiring mind, improves your written skills and helps you to answer difficult questions like why do we have a Queen AND a Prime Minister?

In years 10 and 11 you will study the 20th Century World and find out about the causes of the First World War and Hitler’s Foreign Policy. You will complete coursework on Britain at War, and your depth study will be the USA from the Roaring Twenties to the Civil Rights Protests.

At A level you will study Nazi Germany and the USA from the Twenties to the New Deal, and you will examine the Tudor Triumph of Elizabeth the First as well as completing your personal coursework study on a topic of your choice.

At both KS4 and KS5 you will use a wide range of skills including analysis, interpretation, evaluation and discussion to examine the topics studied and open your mind to new ideas, concepts and thought processes. You will not only look at the events and characters of the past, but examine their motives, causes and effects, as well as utilising historians' views to suggest why our interpretations of these events and people have changed over time.
