Maths GCSE

MATHEMATICS (Single GCSE)
Including GCSE Mathematics, GCSE Statistics & Functional skills mathematics.

What are the Key Features?
Students study topics within the general areas of:
• Number
• Algebra
• Shape, Space and Measures
• Data Handling
• Using and Applying Mathematics
this provides a course which fulfils all the requirements of the National Curriculum.

GCSE Mathematics has two tiers, Higher and Foundation; both tiers allow students to achieve a C grade. The course is examined at the end of year 10 with two papers in June. Students will then have the opportunity to improve their grade in November and June of year 11.

GCSE Statistics is a separate GCSE and is taken by students in set 1 only, two tiers are also available at Higher and Foundation level. The topics involved are the handling data topics of GCSE mathematics. The assessment is by coursework worth 25% of the total marks and one exam in June of year 11 worth 75% of the total marks.

Functional skills mathematics is an alternative assessment which enables students to obtain a mathematics qualification which is recognisable by further education and employers as an alternative to GCSE Mathematics. Also various diplomas require functional skills mathematics to be included in their Diploma award. The topics involve number, handling data, shape, space and measure. The assessments are taken periodically during year 11.

How is the course taught?
Students are taught in groups with other students of similar mathematical ability. They are given the opportunity to work individually, in pairs, small groups or as a class depending on which format best suits the learning objectives.

How is it assessed?
Progress is monitored regularly by class topic assessments, grades being reported by half term reports. Also year group tests together at the end of year 10 and a mock GCSE in year 11. Students are entered for the examination tier in which they are most likely to be successful.

Why study this course?
Advanced Level Mathematics is available to students who achieved a B grade or above at the Higher tier of entry. All students study Pure Mathematics and choose either statistics or mechanics as the applied mathematics module. The AS course consists of three modules in year 12 and the A2 course consists of a further three modules in year 13.
Also available at post 16, is an opportunity to improve their grade at GCSE mathematics.
