Religious Education GCSE
What are the Key Features?
Religion is undeniably an important factor in world affairs and peoples’
lives and this course aims to bring students to a broader understanding
of religion in today’s world. You do not have to be a ‘religious person’
to take a GCSE in Religious Studies. There are plenty of opportunities
for students to develop and express their own ideas on a variety of social
and moral issues during the course, as well as learn about the beliefs
and practices of religious people.
How is the course taught?
In Year 10 students study Edexcel Unit 2 - Religion and Life based on a
study of Christianity. Students are examined on four sections:
1: Believing in God
2: Matters of Life and Death
3: Marriage and the Family
4: Religion and Community Cohesion
In Year 11 students study Edexel Unit 8 - Religion and Society based on
a study of Christianity and Islam. Students are examined on four sections:
1: Rights and Responsibilities
2: Environmental and Medical Issues
3: Peace and Conflict
4: Crime and Punishment
How is it assessed?
Year 10 - Unit 2 religion and Life based on a study of Christianity.
Written examination paper taken June of Year 10. 100% - 2 hour examination.
Year 11 Unit 8 Religion and Society based on a study of Christianity
and Islam. Written examination paper taken June of Year 11. 100% - 2
hour examination.
There is no coursework element in either of the units.
Why study this course?
A qualification in Religious Studies is recognised by all colleges, universities
and employers. As it is a study of people it also has an obvious value for
many careers.
