OCR Twenty First Century Science - Additional Applied Science
What are the Key Features?
Most students in year 10 will study additional applied Science.
Students will study three modules in total over a two year period.
The modules studied are:
AP1: Life Care
AP2: Agriculture and Food
AP5: Communications
How is it assessed?
In the June of Year 10 students will be examined on the Life Care
module.
In the January of Year 11 students will be examined
on the Agriculture and Food module.
In the June of Year 11 students will be examined
on the communications module.
Each of these examinations account for 16.7% of
the students final GCSE grade.
The additional applied science course is heavily
coursework led and students will be expected to produce and maintain
their coursework folders. Students are expected to complete six
standard procedures in the laboratory, where they have to demonstrate
an ability to follow a scientific procedure. These standard procedures
account for 12% of the final grade.
Students are also expected to produce a work-related
report looking at a practitioner of science and commenting on the
skills that they are required to use as part of their job. The
work related report accounts for 17% of the final GCSE grade.
Finally, students are expected to produce a suitability
test. Students are required to test the suitability of materials
or procedures. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to
describe the properties or characteristics of a test, follow or
devise a suitable
Why study this course?
The additional applied science course meets the needs of students
who wish to develop their scientific understanding through authentic,
work-related contexts. The course focuses on scientific procedures
and technical knowledge. The course gives students an insight
into what is involved in working in the field of science.
