Physical Education (Single GCSE)

What are the Key Features?
The course consists of theoretical and practical work. There are 3 theoretical areas to be covered:
• General Health and Fitness (methods of training, diet, personal hygiene and reasons for participation.
• Sports injuries (causes, symptoms and treatment).
• Basic anatomy and physiology (major muscle, bones and body symptoms).

The practical aspect involves students studying seven different sports in detail over the two years of the course, of which the best four grades are selected for final moderation. Students are assessed continuously and also in a final practical examination, where they are expected to perform, observe and verbally report on techniques to a high standard.

How is the course taught?
Throughout the course theory and practice are interrelated. Candidates complete end of unit tests and results are put into a league format. A range of teaching methods are used, ranging from the traditional to the more informal discussion approach.

How is it assessed?
Practical Performance (60%). Students are assessed in four different practical areas. These performances are continuously assessed throughout the course and are externally moderated.
Written examination (40%). Students sit one written exam in Year 11 which includes multiple choice questions as well as short written answers. There will be continual assessment throughout the course and in the second year of the course, there will be an opportunity for selected students to opt for G.C.S.E short course P.E. (1/2 a G.C.S.E). The course involves section A and B of the theory work and assessment in 2 practical areas. The written exam is 1 hour with all questions being multiple choice format.
