Physical Education (Single GCSE)
What are the Key Features?
The course consists of theoretical and practical work. There are
3 theoretical areas to be covered:
• General Health and Fitness (methods of training, diet, personal
hygiene and reasons for participation.
• Sports injuries (causes, symptoms and treatment).
• Basic anatomy and physiology (major muscle, bones and body symptoms).
The practical aspect involves students studying
seven different sports in detail over the two years of the course,
of which the best four grades are selected for final moderation.
Students are assessed continuously and also in a final practical
examination, where they are expected to perform, observe and verbally
report on techniques to a high standard.
How is the course taught?
Throughout the course theory and practice are interrelated. Candidates
complete end of unit tests and results are put into a league
format. A range of teaching methods are used, ranging from the
traditional to the more informal discussion approach.
How is it assessed?
Practical Performance (60%). Students are assessed in four different
practical areas. These performances are continuously assessed
throughout the course and are externally moderated.
Written examination (40%). Students sit one written exam in Year
11 which includes multiple choice questions as well as short written
answers. There will be continual assessment throughout the course
and in the second year of the course, there will be an opportunity
for selected students to opt for G.C.S.E short course P.E. (1/2
a G.C.S.E). The course involves section A and B of the theory work
and assessment in 2 practical areas. The written exam is 1 hour
with all questions being multiple choice format.
N.B. Due to the nature of the course a high level
of practical ability and commitment to extracurricular clubs is
essential for students to develop their full potential
Why study this course?
Students have the opportunity to follow a course in Advanced level
Physical Education, BTEC First and National awards in our sixth
form.
