Sport Leader Award
The Sports Leader Award is a nationally recognised award for 14-16 year olds.
The Award develops a young person’s skills in organising activities,
planning, communicating and motivating. Sawyers Hall PE Department
sees this award as a brilliant stepping stone for young people
to become involved in leading and coaching sport.
The Junior Sports Leader Award can be used to compliment the requirements
of parts of Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum for Physical
Education. The syllabus is designed to develop generic skills which
can be applied to a variety of sporting activities, as well as
contributing to the candidate’s personal and social education.
It is a practical qualification in which candidates should demonstrate
knowledge and understanding mainly through physical competence
rather than written work.
Throughout practical lessons pupils are taught the following units:
Unit 01 - Planning, preparing and assisting a simple sporting activity.
Unit 02 - Basic communication skills for leading a sporting activity.
Unit 03 - Principles / practice in delivering a basic health /
fitness session.
Unit 04 - Understanding fair play in sport.
Unit 05 - Understanding the role of the sports official.
Unit 06 - Understanding the scope of local sport and recreation
activities.
Unit 07 - Demonstration of leadership skills in sport.
It’s a practical qualification where candidates learn through doing,
rather than through written work. A candidate's ability as a competent
leader is assessed by observation rather than written tests.
Last year we had a 100% pass rate for pupils who took part in this
course. The practical assessments take place with Year 7 pupils
and our feeder primary schools.
